Types of Water Damage

Water damage is typically classified into one of the following three categories:

1. Clear Water: Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans. Examples include broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows, or appliance malfunctions that involve supply lines.
2. Gray Water (Category 2 Water): Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and can cause discomfort or sickness through exposure or consumption. Gray water carries microorganisms and nutrients of microorganisms. Examples include toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure, and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines. Gray Water that isn’t promptly removed from the structure, or has remained stagnant for 48-72 hours, may be classified as Category 3 water.
3. Black Water: Refers to a source of water that is grossly unsanitary and contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi. Black water causes severe discomfort or sickness from exposure to contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, rising water from river or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Toilet back flows that originate from beyond the toilet trap are considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Water Damage Problems

Wet areas left unchecked can turn into mold and quickly spread throughout the living space, leading to serious health consequences. Some of those consequences include mold allergies which are characterized by watery, itchy eyes, a chronic cough, headaches or migraines, difficulty breathing, rashes and overall tiredness. Other consequences include sinus issues, nasal blockage, and frequent sneezing. Mold creates an unsafe environment for you, your family and your pets. If you experience any symptoms as a result of exposure to mold consult a health professional.

Water damage can come from a variety of situations, including water from the outside, flooding from the inside, long term leaks that go undetected and other unforeseen situations. Getting the liquid dried-up quickly helps prevent the creation of mold behind base boards, floors, walls and roofs.

When you’re facing water damage, time is of the essence. Quick action is the best way to address water damage while simultaneously halting the destruction process (rotting of wood, growth, rusting of steel, delaminating of materials such as plywood, carpet, etc.); making the right decisions on who to call and when to call is crucial. Let HiCaliber stop the spreading of mold in its tracks.
