Is Your Home Killing You?

The Answer May Surprise You

The pest control guy has just finished up, leaving a rather nasty smell in your home. He assures you that as soon as the chemicals are dry the odor will go away. But you can’t wait that long. So you open a few windows and light some candles to mask the smell. Or maybe you use an air-freshener instead.

If you’re like many people, you’re all too familiar with this occurrence. If not, then surely you have experienced something burning on the stove.

Most of us don’t think about the pollutants that are in our homes. These pollutants come from many sources – from activities within our homes, to the chemicals we use to clean with, to the very materials our home is constructed with.

According to the EPA, most homes are between two and five times more toxic than outdoor air is. And a number of studies back this finding.

Your family is counting on you to protect them

Air pollution has been linked to an increase in a number of diseases. Most people think of asthma, but that is just one. An increase in heart attacks has also been linked to dirty air.

Did you know that high levels of carbon dioxide can cause Alzheimer –type symptoms: memory loss, as well as concentration problems? It has also been linked to exhaustion. Enclosed structures, especially energy-efficient buildings, are a collecting point for carbon dioxide.

What can you do to protect your family?

• Use all natural products to clean your home and your laundry – these include items such as baking soda, water, and essential oils
• Lower your stove’s temperature to avoid over-heating oils
• Store paint and solvents in a well-ventilated area outside of your home, or discard them properly
• Thoroughly vacuum your carpets at least three times a week (daily if possible,) using a high-quality machine with a HEPA filter
• Sanitize surfaces, especially high-contact surfaces like door knobs and toilet handles, at least once a week (and more frequently if a family member is sick)
• Clean all ducts and registers frequently – keep dust from building up
• Replace standard air-filters with HEPA filters
• Regularly clean your floors (carpets should be cleaned by steam extraction to remove all contaminates)
• Open windows to circulate air
